Brown Gold Chocolate brown gold jewelry is currently being marketed as a fashion trend. Like black gold, brown coloration is formed by a surface layer. The methods used include oxidation and physical vapor deposition (PVD) of brown zirconium nitride. Patination by immersion in Liver of Sulfur is a traditional method, but it is not used in mass manufactured jewelry. Oxidation. This method of coloring can be achieved on gold alloyed with metals such as iron, manganese, nickel, and copper. Incorporating these metals into karat golds and oxidizing them under controlled conditions produces brown oxides on the surface. Bright brown colors based on this approach are claimed in a Japanese patent (JP 2185934) for gold-silver or gold-nickel-manganese alloys containing 60 to 95 percent gold. The thickness of the brown layer and the degree of brownness increases with the time of oxidation.photo credit: Ring by Yvel. |
